The seven shortlisted books are Fairy Tales by Jane Ray (Walker Books), Willy's Pictures by Anthony Browne (Walker Books), Snail Trail by Ruth Brown (Andersen Press), Beware of the Storybook Wolves (Hodder Children's Books) and I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato (Orchard Books), both by Lauren Child, Crispin: The Pig Who Had It All by Ted Dewan (Doubleday), and Fox by Ron Brooks (Franklin Watts).
The chair of the judges, Sarah Wilkes, said, 'The range includes something for the very young, through to illustrated books for the older independent reader. In our multi-media society no-one should underestimate the role of top-quality illustrated books in the development of children's visual literacy skills.'
