Analysis: Trawling for evidence

The progress of the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People's Services (C4EO) in supporting professionals delivering early years services is examined by Sue Owen.

C4EO was established in July 2008 to gather and share the best knowledgeavailable on 'what works' to contribute to a step-change in outcomes forchildren and young people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

It is nearly a year since I accepted the role as theme lead for EarlyYears at C4EO. The specialist theme leads are supported by a smallvirtual office based at the National Children's Bureau and staff fromthe partner organisations, who manage the core functions of knowledgereview, dissemination and capacity building. With their help, much hasbeen achieved in providing support to early years professionals.

We are now halfway through the life of the Early Years theme, and one ofthe main tasks at this point is to spread the word and encourage theearly years sector to use the support that the Centre has to offer. Ibelieve that C4EO is in a unique position to help professionals look atnational and international evidence and use it in a ways that make sensefor them and the children and families they work with.
