Amaan's story

Our series on Celebrating Young Children by Jane Cole looks at how pre-school workers help one boy to find a place in his community and When Amaan's older brother Awais was born, the family was new to the area.

When Amaan's older brother Awais was born, the family was new to the area.

The health visitor pointed out the local community centre, where mother-and-tots sessions were held. Awais' mother Shahida attended with her son. She was busy balancing the demands of a baby and work, with some support from her mother.

When Amaan was born, Shahida left work and spent time focusing on developing family life. Awais started at the community pre-school where Amaan later followed.

Shahida appreciated the closeness to home of the pre-school and the warm welcome. The staff were approachable and keen to work with the family to meet the children's needs. She met other parents and learnt about other services in the local area, such as shops and the library.
