All schools 'need maths specialists'

There will need to be at least one mathematics specialist in every primary school, the final report into the teaching of maths in primary schools and early years is expected to say when it is published this week (Tuesday).

The independent review, led by Sir Peter Williams, chair of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), was tasked with defining the most effective way of teaching maths to children from an early age.

The interim report by Sir Peter Williams published in March said that all primary schools should have a specialist maths teacher with 'deep subject knowledge in mathematics. Recognising the need for the overlap in skills, these specialist teachers should include in their professional body of knowledge a comprehensive understanding of the pedagogy of mathematical learning in the EYFS.'

The report backed the Government's goal of increasing the proportion of graduate practitioners in early years settings, but added that there should be an ongoing priority to raise the skills and qualifications of non-graduate early years practitioners.
