A welcome man

As a 22-year-old man working in childcare I read the letter 'Men, the ugly ducklings of childcare' (16 January) with great interest. I started my HNC course in childcare at Falkirk College in August 2001 and my first placement was a nursery class. I was very much encouraged by my tutors at college and by parents who were pleased to see a man within the setting.

Last June I started my first job at the Meadows Nursery School, a private sector nursery, where I am one of four staff looking after 23 children aged three to five. Here the management and staff are very pleased with me and have accepted me within the setting.
