A child's social class at birth has a greater bearing on educational achievement than physical factors, a study has revealed. Research by the Institute of Child Health, published in the British Medical Journal, provides evidence that bigger babies from the professional and managerial classes gain better academic results than those from unskilled groups. But children who are underweight at birth and have the advantage of a well-off home will outperform children who were heavier at birth but come from poorer backgrounds.
