Scotland is best for breast test

Scotland has been chosen as one of only two countries in the world to test a new World Health Organisation strategy which will promote breastfeeding as one of a range of steps to improve children's nutrition. Welcoming Scotland's involvement, health minister Susan Deacon said, 'All children deserve the best possible start in life, whether they live in Harris, Hamilton or Harare. We know breastfeeding and a healthy diet in the early years contributes greatly to that aim.

'Scotland, sadly, has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe, but we are working to improve that. Our target is that in five years, half of the mothers in Scotland will breastfeed their babies for at least six weeks.'
