The Early Years and Primary Teaching Exhibition 2001 will be held in Glasgow's Thistle Hotel and Exhibition Centre on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 September. It is also supported by Glasgow and Edinburgh councils, teachers' union the Educational Institute of Scotland, the Scottish Independent Nurseries Association (SINA), the Scottish Childminding Association and the Scottish Pre-school Play Association (SPPA).
Along with resources from commercial exhibitors, visitors to the event can choose from a varied seminar programme. On 14 September this includes talks by Linda Kinney, head of Stirling Council's Children's Services and a member of the Scottish Executive National Early Education and Childcare Forum, on consulting with children; early years consultant and trainer Joan Pennycook on promoting positive behaviour in the early years; and a session by SPPA training development officer Margaret Brunton and practice development officer Gwen Garner on the Scottish Executive's self-evaluation guide, The Child at the Centre.
In the afternoon Alice Sharp, Nursery World contributor and SINA's new Early Years Executive, and Kevin Kelman, acting depute headteacher of a primary school in Lanarkshire, present a session on play and learning for the under-threes.
On Saturday Drew McCanney, senior inspection and registration officer (under 8s) for Fife Council, will kick off the programme by outlining proposals for the regulation of early education and childcare. Afternoon sessions include Patricia McGinty, director of Bishopbriggs Childcare Centre and a director of SINA, talking about growth through partnership, and Elizabeth Murdoch, training officer with the Scottish Childminding Association, on training for childminders.
