Problems of accessing childcare in London

The problems of accessing childcare in London were discussed last week by politicians and parents at the launch of a report by the Daycare Trust, Facing the Childcare Challenge. Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee also presented findings of research she has carried out into the availability of childcare in the capital. In Greenwich, where the event was held, there is currently only one childcare place for every five children under the age of eight and the typical cost of a nursery place for a child under two is Pounds 168 a week. The Childcare Challenge project has consulted hundreds of disadvantaged parents and children around the country who live outside the 20 per cent most deprived areas about what they need from childcare. Daycare Trust director Stephen Burke said, 'Parents are clear about what they want. Quality childcare services need to be available to all families regardless of where they live or how much they earn.'
