Danny has given his support to Surrey Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership's first Men into Childcare Week, which began on Monday (19 November). The recruitment drive is in response to a Government target for at least six per cent of childcare workers in each local authority area to be male by 2004.

Danny said, 'I thoroughly enjoyed my training and work experience and would encourage any men who feel they would like to be involved to find out more. Some people tend to think of childcare as a woman's job - it isn't. I'm pleased to see that more men are being invited into the profession. It is a really rewarding job to do.'

Surrey EYDCP is taking roadshows around the county this week giving information about what childcare and early education involves, and training opportunities and job vacancies. Male childcarers will also be present to answer questions and talk about their experiences.

Scott Sullivan, who works at Surrey's Hatton Hill nursery chain, said, 'I have occasionally come across parents who would rather hand their children over to a female member of staff, but I see it as a challenge to help address those views. Working with children is a great confidence booster and there are plenty of opportunities to train and develop in the career. It's a really important role and I love it.'
