Over counter cough medicines not advised for young

Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines should no longer be used in children under the age of six, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has advised.

An MHRA review of the benefits and risks of the medicines for childrenunder 12 found no evidence they are effective and revealed that someremedies may cause side effects such as allergic reactions andhallucinations. Following the review, medicines for six- to12-year-olds will continue to be available but will only be sold inpharmacies, with clearer advice from the pharmacist.
