Ofsted to take on social services

The remit of Ofsted could be extended to become the single inspectorate for children and learners, under plans put out for consultation by the Government last week. The consultation proposes that Ofsted would assume responsibility for the children's work of the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the inspection of services provided by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service.

It says that a single inspectorate would 'better reflect the current and proposed arrangements locally of services, for example bringing together services for children and young people in line with the Every Child Matters Green Paper'.

The consultation is part of the Government's wider plans to reduce the number of public sector inspectors from 11 to four, announced by Chancellor Gordon Brown in the March 2005 budget statement.
