Nursery children sing to save the world

Nursery children have taken to the stage to raise awareness of the effects of global warming.

The three- to five-year-olds from Academy for Kids in Friern Barnet,London, dressed as penguins and polar bears and took an audience offamily members on a fictional adventure around the world to show howhumans can prevent the ice caps from melting and help save theplanet.

Songs in the 20-minute musical included 'The Melting Song', 'One World'and 'If You're Feeling Cool, Dress Hot'. Staff used songs and a scriptwritten by Out of the Ark, a company that provides musical resources touse with young children. The story follows Eddie the Penguin as he meetsPeggy the Polar Bear and they go on a mission to educate the humans.

The idea for the musical developed from one nursery child's interest involcanoes, which led to thinking about the environment and the role thathumans play in global warming.

The show on the nursery's purpose-built outdoor stage was part of thenursery's graduation ceremony to celebrate the achievements of thechildren who are moving up to school in September.

Manager Elaine Eastham said, 'The children and teachers thoroughlyenjoyed the play and many of the parents expressed their amazement as tohow well the children performed. The message the play portrayed was verypowerful as to how we care for the world in which we live and whatmeasures we must all take to prevent global warming.'

Children sang songs and told the story of Eddie the penguin who takeshis family on a journey to the North Pole to find a new home afterdiscovering the world he lives in is melting and changing.

Here he meets Peggy the polar bear who tells him that humans are causingthe ice to melt and they must go on a mission to teach adults andchildren how they can help the environment and change things for thebetter.
