Children at Happitots Day Nursery in Garrowhill, Glasgow, have been learning to tidy up the fun way We used to experience the same difficulties as many other nurseries when it came to encouraging the children to tidy up at the end of the day. Staff would be rushed off their feet trying to clear away and it'd be really difficult to involve the children. Now that's all changed and we've discovered a great way to make tidy-up time fun.

We used to experience the same difficulties as many other nurseries when it came to encouraging the children to tidy up at the end of the day. Staff would be rushed off their feet trying to clear away and it'd be really difficult to involve the children. Now that's all changed and we've discovered a great way to make tidy-up time fun.

About three months ago a staff member suggested using songs to encourage the children. We decided to give it a go and chose the 'Hi-ho' and 'Whistle While You Work' songs from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. The children were familiar with the tunes and the film, and they understood that when the music played, it was time to start tidying.

After a talk and a few dry runs we gave it a try, and it's worked brilliantly. We no longer have to nag the children and they tidy up without grumbles! Best of all, unlike the other methods we tried, it has sustained the children's interest.

Tidying hasn't just become easier for the staff. The children are enjoying it, and it has become an important part of the day. Allowing the children to be responsible for tidying away has helped with their confidence and independence, as they take it upon themselves to do tasks they would otherwise have to be told to do.

Now, at 6pm the children are all ready to go home and the tidying up is finished. We've passed on the tip to other nurseries and they're enjoying the same success. We even have parents asking for advice on how to get the children to tidy up at home!
