No panic at NCMA

As an active member of the National Childminding Association I object to Anthea Thomas's comments in her letter ('Same old panic', 10 April) that the NCMA is conducting a panic campaign regarding the Ofsted website. The NCMA exercises a responsibility to keep members and other childminders fully informed about current issues in childcare and this is just one such issue. I recognise that many childminders have their details displayed by local Children's Information Services, but that is their choice and they choose how much personal detail is given.

I recognise that many childminders have their details displayed by local Children's Information Services, but that is their choice and they choose how much personal detail is given.

I feel the real issue here is not that Ofsted will display information, but how it is displayed. Those who wish to harm children will always find a way, but I believe Ofsted has a duty to minimise the risk to children and their carers.

Professionalism is an issue and childminders do want to be promoted in a positive light. Every NCMA member knows what a huge contribution the organisation has made in supporting childminders through training and information, and by helping childminders work towards improving their professional skills and the public perception of this important branch of childcare.
