NEGis costing co-operative 'thousands'

A not-for-profit nursery school in Cambridge run by parents is losing thousands of pounds a year because of the new rules for nursery education funding. Ace Nursery School in the centre of the city employs highly qualified staff and is run as a parent-co-operative. Headteaacher Paula Watson told Nursery World that its expected loss this year was 5,000. The nursery school receives 7.95 per two-and-a-half-hour session for the free entitlement, but the actual cost of the place is 8.50.

Ms Watson said, 'Every time a parent takes a session, we suffer a loss. We feel it's unrealistic to expect all nurseries to have the same costs.

'When we set fees in September we kept the afternoon fees the same as the previous year, but even then we were operating at a loss. We're a responsible nursery school but we're having one hand twisted behind our back.'
