Migrants beware

Employers are going to have to carry the can for ensuring that any au pairs or nannies from abroad they hire are legit. The Government's Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill would impose sharp penalties on anyone found employing an illegal immigrant, with on-the-spot fines and possible imprisonment. Nichola Carter, an associate lawyer at immigration specialists H20 Law LLP, says, 'Parents employing nannies illegally must think also of the wider consequences for family life. The nanny could be removed from the UK with little or no notice, causing significant disruption to childcare arrangements and upset to children; it may be impossible for the nanny to join the family on holidays abroad because re-entry to the UK cannot be guaranteed.' Nichola can be contacted for advice by parents or overseas workers on 020 7405 4700.
