Far-sighted student takes prize

Nicola Clark, 22, is the winner of the Nursery World 2002 student essay competition on the theme of 'Childcare in 2052'. Her entry foresees a future where the Foundation Stage is abolished and children are allowed to develop through quality play experiences. Nicola, who is studying the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies at University College Chichester, predicts that day nurseries of the future will operate around more natural 'family' groupings so children can interact with different age groups and that more men will enter the childcare profession.

She said, 'Starting the degree has made me think more about childcare and the work we do, rather than just going through the motions. It has made me think about what we are doing wrong at the moment and how I'd like to change it, such as the more natural, stimulating childcare environments I described in my essay.'
