Enhancing practice

I felt urged to write after reading 'Nurseries stressed by snap inspections' (News, 18 August). In May our nursery had an unannounced Ofsted inspection, and I see this new approach as a refreshing change.

In May our nursery had an unannounced Ofsted inspection, and I see this new approach as a refreshing change.

Any nursery can give inspectors a fantastic view of their work with five weeks' notice. But if we want to provide the best childcare and education, we should have procedures and practice in place to promote this.

The new inspections are not to catch us out. They are to enhance the good practice many of us already provide.

Our nursery had not been open for a year before the inspection. Our inspector was fair and realistic and, as a former nursery manager, was aware of the financial constraints we are all under at times and how these can affect daily operations.

Inspector's recommendations should be seen as 'ways to improve good base practice'.

Let's face it, we all have another two to three years to improve and surpass ourselves before the inspectors grace us with their presence again.
