Computers bring home learning

Computers are helping to crack one of the toughest problems in nursery education - getting parents involved in children's learning. A project in the nursery class of Glenlee Primary School in Hamilton is showing that after parents were loaned laptops and education software, more than half have become engaged in the child's learning at home.

Deputy headteacher Lisa Quinn said, 'We find it hard to get parents on board with learning. This is a deprived area and it can be difficult. We have run lots of parent-children programmes before, and we needed something fresh and new.'

The nursery's first experience with IT came after the school received a Pounds 5,000 BT innovation grant. 'We had one laptop for us in the nursery school. We laughed and giggled, but the headteacher said you will be able to do something great with this,' Ms Quinn said.
