Communication in the spotlight at NW seminar

A panel of experts will provide updates on research, policy and practice at Nursery World's Communication Masterclass, to be held in London on 6 July.

The first speaker is renowned academic, Colwyn Trevarthen, Professor (Emeritus) of Child Psychology and Psychobiology at the University of Edinburgh. He has gained an international reputation for research into the foundations of communication in infants and toddlers and will be speaking about adult-child engagement and the innate talents of the very young to communicate and make sense of their world.

Helen Moylett, an adviser to the EYFS Review team, will discuss the importance of communication and language to a child's overall development and relevant recommendations of the EYFS Review.

Ms Moylett said, 'Practitioners have a crucial role to play in language development. By understanding child development and being tuned in to these very young language learners, all practitioners can improve children's life chances. Communication and language are the foundations of literacy and later achievement.'

Alice Sharp, managing director of Experiential Play, will suggest stimulating resources and ways to create communication-rich environments, with a focus on under-threes. She said, 'The session will aim to develop an awareness of how babies and young children thrive best in an environment that supports and promotes their active learning and development.'
