Chat to your children

Chat to your children, parents are being urged in a campaign to improve the speaking skills of toddlers which has received backing from Government officials. The campaign follows a joint survey by the National Literacy Trust (NLT) and the National Association of Head Teachers that revealed that just under three-quarters (74 per cent) of 121 heads polled believed that young children's speaking and listening skills had worsened in the past five years. Liz Attenborough, former director of the National Year of Reading, is being funded by the Department for Education and Skills to develop the Talk to Your Baby campaign for the NLT. She said, 'There is no question that the whole communication skills area is incredibly important and the more we can do to help children develop language and communication skills, the better.'
