Changes to childcare inspections

Changes to childcare inspections for nurseries and childminders in England have been outlined in two leaflets published by Ofsted last week. The first leaflet, Building better childcare - Daycare: Children Act and nursery education inspections from April 2003, explains Ofsted's new grading system, where at the end of the inspection the inspector will judge the quality of the provision to be either good, satisfactory or unsatisfactory, depending on whether the provider has completed actions raised at the transition inspection. Providers will then be inspected at least once between April 2003 and March 2005. The second leaflet, Building better childcare - Childminding: Children Act inspections from April 2003, explains the similar grading system for childminders, and refers to the concerns of some childminders about their inspection reports appearing on the Ofsted website. Both leaflets are available free from the website www.ofsted.gov.uk or its publications line on 0700 263 7833.
