Call for more clubs for teenagers

A new Sure Start programme that puts teenagers in contact with integrated service providers at after-school clubs would prevent youngsters from turning to crime, 4Children said last month. The organisation has launched a campaign to create a new framework for children aged over 11.

The organisation has launched a campaign to create a new framework for children aged over 11.

It follows the Government's commitment in the ten-year childcare strategy last month to provide an out-of-school childcare place for all children from three to 14 by 2010. Also by 2010 all secondary schools will open on weekdays between the hours of 8am to 6pm, all year round, offering a range of activities such as music and sport and holiday activities. These will be provided by the schools or in partnership with the private and voluntary sector. Parents will be expected to pay for some of the activities, but many will be eligible for childcare help through the Working Tax Credit.
