Big bahoochies brought to book

Scots children of all ages and abilities are to be put in touch with their traditional culture and language through a new book initiative. The Itchy Coo project, based at the University of Dundee, is producing a range of books for children from pre-school to Advanced Higher level, written in traditional Scots.

The Itchy Coo project, based at the University of Dundee, is producing a range of books for children from pre-school to Advanced Higher level, written in traditional Scots.

The first four books were launched at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 20 August, including two for pre-school age children.

Animal ABC by Susan Rennie has already been welcomed by early learning centres across the country. Children are introduced to 'birlin bears wi big bahoochies', 'a crabbit crocodile wi clarty claes' and 'feart flamingoes in a fankle'.

Planet Fankle, also by Susan Rennie, is the tale of Kat and her 'cyberdug'

and lays to rest the notion that Scots language only deals with old-fashioned subjects. All the books are meant to be contemporary and accessible.
