* While employment agencies are the most accountable route for matching up nannies and families, it is true that personal advertisements in local newspapers and shop windows also serve the purpose. The parents' room in primary schools, doctors' surgeries and baby clinics may have useful noticeboards, and the local health visitor who calls on new mothers is a valuable 'grapevine' contact. If you are advertising yourself, keep it brief and state only your qualification, driving status and availability for work, giving a contact phone number rather than name and address. Avoid putting in adjectives such as 'loving' or 'caring' and any surname that could be taken the wrong way (I have never met a nanny with the surname Whiplash, but I know a Love and a Dear!)
