A nappy change

Is a nappy change stressful to neonates? In this Swedish study, 39 infants in neonatal intensive care born at 23-38 weeks gestation were compared with 30 healthy full-term newborns. Concentrations of cortisol (the stress hormone) in saliva were determined before and after two standardised nappy changes, and pain profiles measured at intervals. Results showed a change in baseline cortisol by age in both groups related to nappy changes. Both groups of infants had an increased pain response. Morelius, E et al.
