
As soon as I got through the front door of Building Blocks Nursery in Tottenham, London, I knew it was a special place. Based in a church hall, and located by a busy road in an area with high levels of child poverty, it is a cornerstone of its diverse, energised community.
Janet Graneau, the nursery's manager, has decades of experience working in the area, originally through community projects focused on women and children. She took on the huge challenge of leading the nursery from an ‘inadequate’ judgement by Ofsted in 2022, where one of the key shortcomings was that ‘not all children receive sufficient support for their communication and language development’.
