
Three is a powerful number: it's the age at which children start to realise what ‘age’ actually means and counting, subitising and sharing starts to become easily grasped. It's also one of the few numbers they are likely to recognise when written down.
One of the reasons we were keen to explore maths outdoors this year was to help address the maths phobia that can creep up on children as they start to work on more complex maths concepts. A sound understanding of number recognition builds confidence and a positive attitude towards maths, which will be vital when more abstract principles are introduced.
