
Q: Trying to be the ‘nice’ manager isn't working and I don't feel respected by my staff. Does anyone have advice on what to do?
‘As a new manager, I have experienced the same problem. I had to change from being a member of the team on the “shop floor” to managing people, and I did not want to start out by going on a power trip. But this meant people began to go astray. Staff were making decisions without me, or even trying to micromanage me. Nine times out of ten their decisions were right – but it was not their job.
