Community: A project that gives the right support, at the right time

What the Thrive at Five project is doing in deprived areas of Stoke-on-Trent and elsewhere to improve outcomes for children. By Caroline Vollans
Thrive at Five’s work is well considered and sensitively approached.

Supporting and advocating for children and families is fundamental to working in the early years. It is especially pertinent in areas with high levels of poverty, where children’s health can be poor and outcomes can be low.

Thrive at Five is a national charity building an innovative approach to address this pressing issue. Its goal is ambitious: a society where every child can achieve their potential.

Founded in 2021, Thrive at Five’s work began in two areas of Stoke-on-Trent: Abbey Hutton and Bentilee. It has also just started working with five communities in Redcar and Cleveland.

Aida Cable, CEO of Thrive at Five, describes its mission: ‘We are helping children develop strong foundations for life and learning, from pregnancy through to age five. We are focusing our work on the children that need it most, in areas where families face the most difficulties. Our approach is to achieve long-term, sustained change by unlocking the power of parents and carers and helping bring together the community and existing services, to strengthen the support for children and families.’
