The rapidly growing nursery group has bought Cherry Childcare, a family-run chain of 11 nurseries across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

Following the deal, Family First now has 96 nurseries, providing around 7,000 childcare places.

Former owner of Cherry Childcare, managing director Nigel Rolfe said, ‘After 14 years, I made the decision to retire from operating nurseries and focus on other activities. Having decided to step down, the biggest challenge was who should take over. From initial discussions with Family First, it was clear there is a common understanding’

Craig Grant, corporate development and strategy officer at Family First Nurseries, added, ‘Cherry Childcare is a fantastic addition to our group, and we are delighted to have all the staff children and parents on board. This strong hub of settings provides an ideal springboard for further growth in and around this area.’

Kids Planet continues to expand

The UK’s third largest nursery group Kids Planet has also bought another setting – Tender Years Day Nursery in Wigan.

The 120-place nursery was established in 2021 as a sister setting to the former owner’s site in Bolton.

Kids Planet now has over 143 settings across the country.

Former owner of Tender Years Day Nursery Rachel Critchley said,’The sale of the business is for a lifestyle change. Kids Planet was the only operator that we would consider as they share the same ethos and drive to provide the best care for children.

Clare Roberts, chief executive of Kids Planet, commented, ‘Tender Years Leigh is a fantastic purpose-built building that is in its infancy but has a dedicated and enthusiastic team in place that will make a great addition to Kids Planet. I am pleased to welcome the nursery into our Kids Planet family and look forward to supporting the team as they integrate into our group.’

Both sales were handled by brokers Christie & Co.
