Position: Manager of Tops Day Nursery at Royal Bournemouth Hospital

How did it feel to win the Award for Significant Change in a Nursery at the Hadland Care Group awards ceremony?

It was a massive surprise and I was very, very happy. We have the awards here in Bournemouth and around 250 people come down, dinner is served and we have a party afterwards. It's a great night.

Managing director Cheryl Hadland talked about the 'Magda Effect' on your nursery. What do you think you have brought to the setting?

I spend a lot of time on the nursery floor. I try to be positive, energetic about new ideas and proactive. I have introduced eco-friendly, open-ended resources.

You were also nominated for the ABCD award (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty) by other staff members. How did it feel?

It's really nice to be recognised by other staff. I hope I'm not a manager that people are scared of. I think partnership is very important. No one can be creative if they feel threatened. I try to give choices rather than solutions to staff.
