Re: 'Too young for school' – June O'Sullivan (NW, February and online)

Once again, June has identified a crucial issue at the current time. With the government’s drive to increase nursery provision in schools, there needs to be far more discussion about the suitability of schools for two-year-olds.

I have witnessed first-hand the effects of schools taking over such provision.

Too often, this involves head teachers riding roughshod over the experience and expertise of nursery staff to drive through their own agenda.

The ‘top-down’ approach to the school curriculum is then enforced upon very young nursery children, rather than a ‘next steps’ approach, based on a secure knowledge of child development.
