With Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement yesterday (22 May) that a general election will be held on 4 July, ‘the moment for Britain to choose its future’ has come a bit sooner than expected.
Historically, education trails behind health and the economy as a priority for voters, but with the expanded childcare offer now hurtling towards 15 hours for nine-month-olds in September, subsidised childcare will undoubtedly be an important factor for a sizeable slice of the electorate.
As parents’ expectations for places increases, so does the sector’s challenges when it comes to capacity and recruitment. Meanwhile the tragic cases of nursery deaths of two young children are a disturbing wake-up call. The importance of ensuring that provision for our youngest children is of the very highest standard cannot be over-stated.
