Tax credit effects

Since the introduction in October 1999 of the childcare tax credit scheme as part of the Working Families Tax Credit, I have completed hundreds of forms for parents. The result has been about a 10 per cent of take-up with me - and that includes parents who were already registered with me before the scheme came in. I think the Treasury should pay the provider who completes the form and thus stop fraudulent claims, despite what the paymaster general has said (News, 7 March). Iknow that the tax office is pursuing one person who tried to claim for three children and actually registered none with me, and there are a lot more about.
