The study published in The Lancet journal suggests current approaches to curbing obesity have ‘failed a generation of children and adolescents.’
It finds that between 1990 and 2021, the prevalence of overweight and obese children and adolescents together doubled. Obesity alone tripled.
By 2021, 93·1 million children aged 5–14 years and 80·6 million 15–24 year-olds were obese.
The study says that beyond 2021, increases in obesity are expected to continue for all populations in all world regions. ‘Substantial change’ is expected between 2022 and 2030.
By 2050, it forecasts that 360 million five-to-24-year-olds will be obese.
