Inspectors stand by complaints

The Care Commission has upheld a complaint against a private nursery in Renfrewshire about the safety of children playing in the nursery car park, which is next door to a stable.

Renfrewshire Council had raised concerns about the safety of childrenplaying at Mid Gavin Nursery after some horses jumped the fence, although no children were in the car park at the time (News, 23July).

Nursery staff told inspectors who made a short-notice visit they wereunhappy with children playing in this area of the car park.

Inspectors upheld the complaint. They concluded, 'The service has a vastarray of child-friendly dedicated areas for outdoor play. Usingtemporary barriers in a car park may compromise the health and welfareof children.'

Another complaint about staffing ratios was also upheld, after examplesof 1:19 ratios were given for lunchtime cover, with driving and kitchenstaff included.
