Early years staff lack confidence developing a suitable strategy for two-year-olds, with few having had specific training to lead a room for children of this age, finds new research.

A new report on two-year-olds by London Early Years Foundation’s (LEYF) chief executive, June O’Sullivan and Louise Hannan, lecturer at University Centre Somerset, finds 12 years on since the inaugural report, practitioners still lack the confidence to lead a two-year-old room effectively and ‘weave’ routine activities into practice so they’re not just following a ‘timetable’.

It also suggests that few staff have received specific training to lead two-year-old rooms. The training they have accessed has either been small, work-based sessions, inset days, informal networking or online workshops and courses. This has mainly been due to time constraints, limited funding and finding suitable training expertise.
