Consult all on centres

I run a nursery in Tameside, Greater Manchester. The problem caused by lack of consultation on children's centres opening locally, highlighted by Claire Macdonald (Letters, 7 July), is also being faced in my area. Although children's centres are a great idea, the nurseries that are often attached to them are, in most cases, detrimental to other nurseries nearby.

There is a 50-place nursery attached to a children's centre being built 200 yards down the road. It is being built with Government money (our money). My 82-place nursery was not even considered in the numbers needed in the area.

I have written to my local MP and Beverley Hughes, minister for children, and I have a meeting with the National Day Nurseries Association's North West regional manager.

I totally agree that the Government strategies need to include existing provision.

I would recommend that all private providers who feel the same way to put pen to paper and lobby their views now before any more children's centres are built.
