Children going without essentials and parents getting into debt due to non-payment of child maintenance

Children are going without essentials because they are not getting the maintenance they are entitled to, according to new research.

The latest report from single parent charity Gingerbread highlights separated parents’ experiences of the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) and its impact on them. The report is funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF).

It reveals how parents who receive no maintenance or less than what has been agreed are struggling to pay for essentials and their children are missing out on leisure activities and school trips.

Key findings from the report find the Child Maintenance Service:

Child poverty

The report stresses how Child Maintenance has a ‘significant’ role to pay in addressing child poverty through reducing the number of separated families who have no maintenance arrangement in place and tacking arrangements that are not paid in full or consistently.
