Access to nutritious food is vital for children’s health, growth and cognitive development. For children who eat all their meals in early years settings, these meals can make up 90 per cent of their daily caloric intake(1), underscoring the need for balanced, high-quality food. FixOurFood views early years settings, alongside schools, as crucial to transforming food systems. University of York Professor Maria Bryant, who initiated the project, said, ‘Early years childcare offers a crucial opportunity to foster healthy eating habits. This report calls for cross-party action to review food standards and increase resources to ensure proper nutrition during this vital stage of development.’
