Management Queries: What to do when staff criticise a child's appearance?

If staff criticise children's appearance, what should managers do? By Gabriella Jozwiak

Q: I've heard a member of staff make rude comments about children, such as how a child always looks ‘scruffy’ and that she doesn't like another child's hair oil. How should I deal with this?

‘The first thing I would do in this situation is have a conversation with that member of staff. It is unacceptable to say such things about a child, especially in front of them or other children.

‘Talk to them about what is appropriate to say about children, to ensure they feel valued, and to promote a sense of belonging for the children in a setting.

‘Also unpick their comment a bit more – find out if there is anything going on with the child's family, and if they might need support. You never know what might be going on at home.
