New guidance for working with under-threes has been launched in Scotland. Jennie Lindon compares it with England's version England and Scotland have now both directly addressed quality for the under-threes. In England, the Birth to Three Matters framework was published by the DfES/Sure Start in November 2002. In Scotland, a consultation paper published in 2003 has now evolved into Birth to Three: supporting our youngest children. Children at early years centres in St Helens, Merseyside, will be sitting pretty for many summers to come thanks to an innovative project which uses natural structures such as willow trees to create shaded areas in playgrounds. The Partners in Shade project is funded by Merseyside Health Action Zone and is being led by Ruth Strong, who was involved in the first project of this type in nearby Sefton and who said, 'Once the sites are established, they will be maintained by staff, children and parents. Come autumn, we hope to get people involved in willow weaving!'

But after turning to Sensorium it took just a fortnight for Megan to begin to regain the self-confidence that had evaporated the day she started school. 'Both myself and my husband John were dyslexic, and when Megan started in primary she started doing things which are traditionally viewed as dyslexic - writing letters backwards and so on.'

I'd like to congratulate Nursery World on the Pioneers series. In these days of exciting change, it is good to remember that we are far from being the first to face new challenges. When things are hard we should remember that our forebears had difficult lives in many ways too. We were thrilled to read the article about Susan Isaacs ('Enquiring minds', 20 January), as a nursery school started by Dr Isaacs in 1928 with funding from an American benefactor called Natalie Davies, whose son was one of our first pupils.
