Construction has also begun on a state-of-the-art Just Learning nursery at Maidstone Hospital, Kent. The purpose-built nursery will replace the existing Angel Lodge nursery, which Just Learning acquired six years ago, and will provide 112 places for children aged between six weeks and five years. Staff numbers are expected to double to more than 30. The nursery is due to open on 3 January 2005. Priority booking and discounted fees will be available for NHS staff.

A new primary school is to be built in Banbury, Oxfordshire, which will include a nursery for three-to five-year-olds. As part of the scheme the existing Dashwood School will move into the new premises and its site will be sold off. Building work begins next month on the old Cattlemarket site and the school is projected to open in September 2007.

Your letter of the week about having grandmothers on the nursery staff (Nursery World, 13 January) raised a laugh in our office on a Friday afternoon, but it also made my blood boil. What blatant stereotyping! I am a grandmother and yes, I knit and I can play dominoes, but I'd hope to bring a lot more to my granddaughter's playgroup than that.
