I have thoroughly enjoyed my year's subscription to Nursery World, but will not be renewing it as I am now working with Key Stages 3 and 4 and post-16 pupils. Like many women returning to work after time at home with children, I looked for a job I would enjoy and was happy doing it, even though the pay was poor.

Kids' Club calls for children's centres

A leading children's charity has called for a children's centre to be set up in every community, to make it as easy for families to access childcare services for school-age children as it is to access a GP surgery or primary school. The Kids' Clubs Network (KCN) is supporting the concept of children's centres, which would be aimed at four-to 14-year-olds. The idea emerged from the Childcare Commission report published back in January. The Commission, chaired by former social security minister Harriet Harman, was set up by KCN and spent a year seeking the views of the public.

Teaching assistant, non-teaching assistant, classroom assistant, nursery nurse, early years practitioner... The number of job titles given to support staff in primary schools is only outdone by the number of different contractual arrangments and job descriptions that they have. A survey by the Professional Association of Nursery Nurses found huge variations in salaries, roles and responsibilities (see News, page 4). One thing that support staff do have in common, however, is that they feel totally undervalued for the important work they do. As the rise in the number of classroom assistants et al continues, it is surely time to address the inconsistencies and make sure that adequate training and a career ladder are put in place.

I work as a nursery nurse in a nursery class. I am NNEB-qualified as well as holding the Certificate in Post-Qualifying Studies. If the teacher in charge of the nursery class is absent we have a qualified teacher in to cover - albeit with no nursery training or experience - while if either myself or my NNEB colleague are absent the class has to manage without a replacement for a few days.

Survey finds strong support for a national system of recording

A University of Glasgow survey into views on assessment of pupils' progress across the three to 14 age range has found strong support for a common national system for recording and reporting, seen as particularly important at the transition point between nursery and primary. At present, practice varies widely between local education authorities across Scotland. Many pre-school centres rely on word-of-mouth reports and informal discussion to transfer information to primary schools and even where written information is passed on, there is often no basis for primary schools to be sure that staff are using consistent standards in assessing, recording and reporting on children's achievements.

It is designed as a one-stop shop to help teachers pass on the most relevant information at the most appropriate times in a child's education and will be implemented in schools from August 2001.

* Playgroups in Derry have expressed fears for their future due to Northern Ireland's pre-school education policy. Representatives from four community playgroups - St Joseph's, the Holy Family, St Bernadette's and Claudy - met Martin McGuinness to express their concern that the establishment of new nursery units in primary schools in the Derry area was having an adverse impact on the future viability of private and voluntary pre-school groups there.

I trained at the Norland College in the 1980s, when it was still providing a busy residential nursery service. There was a need for overnight care then, and there is even more so now. Here in Norway where I live now, there is a 24-hour daycare centre near Oslo airport. It provides all kinds of hours to suit shiftworkers - occasional regular absences, such as long-haul flight staff, and babysitting occasions that are one-offs. The children can do any mixture of care, providing the numbers are kept within specific totals.
