The Roman Catholic church in England and Wales has been urged to carry out police checks on all clergy, staff and volunteers who come into contact with children, in a bid to stamp out child abuse and restore confidence in priests. The call for police checks followed the publication last week of the first independent report into child protection in the Catholic church in England and Wales, and is one of 50 recommendations aimed at making the church environment safer and more secure for children. The report, compiled by a committee headed by Lord Nolan, builds on guidelines on preventing child abuse published in 1994, with proposals aimed at improving existing diocesan and national structures and procedures, so that parishes are supported in their efforts to protect children in their care.

I am a registered childminder writing in response to Maggie Dyer's two recent letters to Nursery World (15 March and 12 April). I would like her to know that some of us have taken her first letter in the spirit intended - to highlight to the Government how ridiculous it is being by, on one hand encouraging childminders to be positive role models to teenage mothers and, on the other, allowing childminders to smack children and smoke in front of them. What sort of double message does this give?

Do you look after a child who can't help wetting the bed? Drier sheets could be on the way with the aid of a new telephone helpline launched this month. The Bedwetting Education advisory line will offer advice and reassurance to carers and parents. It is run by qualifed nurse Helena Baker, who says, 'The important point to remember is that a child's self-esteem will improve once they become dry, and only 14 to 16 per cent of children will naturally become dry in one year, after the age of five or six, so it is worth seeking advice. There are so many treatment options available.' For confidential advice phone 0800 085 8189.

'I spent ten years as a social worker being constrained by resources and asking how on earth can we manage to help people? Now we can say, "What would make a difference to you?"', she says.

Boys and girls are individuals from the first weeks of life, but they are not born significantly different in behaviour or temperament as a result of their sex. There are no sex differences that support some of the confident predictions by adults about how children will turn out. The influence of nurture can be seen very early on, when many adults assume that a crying baby boy needs a lively bounce, whereas a fretful baby girl needs a calming cuddle. In your childcare training you will have discussed the practice of equal opportunities in gender - how we treat girls and boys. But when you work as a nanny, you need to consider how to apply these ideas in somebody else's home, with a sensitivity to parents' preferences in their own family.
