Emily McIvor, the party's children's issues spokeswoman, has taught children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. She called the current law on child protection, which dates back to 1860, 'unacceptable' and said that parents should not be prosecuted 'for trivial smacks'. She added, 'In the countries that have banned child punishment, all the evidence suggests that reform works. Parents use positive discipline methods, which reduces stress and improves the relationship between parents and children.'
