Childcare for National Health Service staff is the focus for a conference in London on 12 February. 'Beyond Workplace Nurseries' is the second annual NHS childcare conference organised by the Daycare Trust on behalf of the NHS. Speakers will include health minister John Hutton, Nick Tooze of the Sure Start Unit, and Daycare Trust director Stephen Burke. Workshops topics will include developing local strategy; working in partnership; and employers, tax credits and childcare. There will also be a panel discussion with Debbie Mellor of the Department of Health, Delyth Lloyd-Evans of the Pan-London Workforce Development Confederation, and Karen Jennings of Unison. Kidsunlimited, the sixth-largest private nursery group in the UK and Ireland, made a loss of 1.89m after tax in the ten months to 30 April 2002, on a turnover of 9.3m. Finance director Stephen Chalmers-Morris said 372,000 of the loss had been incurred by raising funds to expand. The operating loss before interest, depreciation and exceptional items was 346,212. 'If you look at the operating loss on a cash basis, the loss is not as severe,' he said.

(Photograph) - Comedian Tony Hawks presented Samantha Tomlin, human resource manager for ChildBase (second from right), with a National Training Award for achieving lasting excellence through training that benefits the company, its staff and the community. The Newport Pagnall-based nursery chain won the award in recognition of its on-the-job training for NVQs along with courses for management development and having its own assessment centre for work-based qualifications.

Learning about the principles and main features of the Reggio Emilia approach will help educators examine their own practice The pre-schools of Reggio Emilia, in northern Italy, came to international attention in 1991 when Newsweek magazine named one of its schools, the Diana School, one of the ten best schools in the world. Since then, interest in the Reggio approach has grown enormously. The two visits of the exhibition 'The 100 Languages of Children' to the UK in 1997 and 2000 drew audiences of more than 50,000 people. Over 300 professionals from the UK have joined study tours to Reggio Emilia to see the philosophy in practice in the region's pre-schools and infant-toddler centres.

Children's Plan to enable playgrounds to be used in Easter holidays

Children will be able to use 500 new or refurbished playgrounds in this Easter's holidays. The sites, part of the first roll-out of the 235m play investment announced in the Children's Plan, will be open in 63 local authorities across England. The Government has pledged to fund 3,500 play areas and 30 adventure playgrounds in England by 2011 (News, 18 December). A list of new spaces is available at www.dcsf.gov.uk/play.

Recently I completed my CACHE Diploma in Nursery Nursing. I feel proud and privileged to have a professional award and have decided to further my career. After arduous enquiries and being turned down by several universities, I finally managed to convince my local university of the content and depth of the course I had studied. As a result, I am now looking forward to beginning a three-year BSc degree programme to train to become a midwife.
