Nearly 4,500 Scottish nursery nurses who are members of the public services union Unison were expected to take part in a three-day programme of industrial action this week. Unison called the action, which was likely to affect 80 per cent of Scotland's nursery provision, in support of a pay and regrading claim first lodged in 2001. Nursery nurses in Glasgow planned to take part in a march on Tuesday to highlight their campaign for better salaries in recognition of their growing responsibilities.

Further to the news story about the childcare course run by International Correspondence Schools ('500 for uncredited course', 18 September), I was disappointed to discover when I finished the course that it is not accredited or recognised. I have paid 200 to ICS for the course and owe 279. As a single mother with three children I find it very hard to pay that kind of money, which I took from my child benefit. My aim was that by the time I completed the course, I would have been able to get a job working in childcare and would also have stopped having to rely on benefits. But now I realise that I have wasted both my time and my money.

Approximately 5 per cent of children stammer for a period of time, and many of these will recover without help. For those who continue to stammer, we know that early intervention by a speech and language therapist is vital.

In the final part of a series of articles on Birth to Three Matters, Ann Langston and Professor Lesley Abbott consider the healthy child - physically and psychologically When a baby is born, everybody hopes it will be healthy, yet even though not all children are born with perfect health, the fourth aspect of the Birth to Three framework refers to a Healthy Child. Why? It does so because health is seen in terms of a number of dimensions, which are not simply about physical health but about children's psychological well being, their growth and development, their safety and protection from harm, and the way they learn to make healthy choices.

Last time I wrote that I cannot sing for toffee, I was politely rebuked by one or two people who quite rightly say that everyone should feel confident about taking part in musical activities.
